Brief summary of the Iceni Tribe

* A Celtic tribe that inhabited an area of Britain corressponding roughly to modern day Norfolk, between roughly 1st century BC and 1st century AD

* Tacitus (a Roman senator and historian) records that the Iceni were not conquered in the Claudian invasion of AD43, but came to a voluntary alliance with the Romans, which allowed them to uphold their independence.

*They uprose against the Romans in 47AD, were defeated, but allowed to retain independence.

* The meaning of Iceni is unknown

* Their second uprising in 61AD occurred after the death of their King Prasutagus. In his Will he left half to the Roman empire, and half to his wife Boudicca and their two teenaged daughters. The Romans ignored his will and seized his entire estate, whipping Boudicca, raping her daughters and treating the Iceni as slaves.
